Things to do this weekend, June 26-27

Party at the Park

Arlington is throwing a free, dog-friendly community party this Saturday June 26 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Metro Park, 1330 South Fair St. across from the Pentagon City Costco. The Party at the Park website says it will be a “great day of live music, games, food, beer, wine, and fundraising for Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation.” The Arlington’s Top Dog contest, which has a $5 donation entry fee to Lost Dog, features categories including Best Trick, Looks Most Like Owner and Best Dressed.

GRREAT Day at Barrel Oak Winery

Super dog-friendly Barrel Oak Winery (Get it? B.O.W.?) in Delaplane, Va., is less than an hour’s drive from DC. On Sunday June 27 Golden Retriever Rescue, Education & Training (GRREAT) is hosting a day of fun and relaxation with your dog.

They have a wide selection of Virginia wines, including some with cute dog names like “BowHaus” and “Chocolate Lab” dessert wine which has an amazing rich chocolate taste. All dogs are welcome, not just Goldens. Relax on their large patio while sipping a chardonnay, listening to live music and enjoying the beautiful mountain views!

June 25 is Take Your Dog to Work Day

Pet Sitters International started Take Your Dog to Work Day in 1999 to celebrate the bond we have with our canine pals, and to encourage adoptions of dogs in shelters and from rescue groups. Check out this cute video on YouTube, “Top Ten Reasons to Take Your Dog to Work.”

Forget about vacation, gym memberships and flexible spending accounts–the benefits of being able to take your dog to work, everyday, are outstanding. I’ve been lucky enough to have had two jobs, at HorsePlay magazine (sadly no longer in publication) and Nutramax Laboratories, where I brought my Golden to work.

Not only did it keep me from shooting out of the office right at 5 o’clock, by getting rid of that stress of knowing my poor pooch was at home with yellow eyeballs if I had to work late, but she lifted the spirits of my co-workers with quick belly rub breaks. It puts petty workplace politics into perspective when a sweet Golden greets everyone with unconditional love and a wagging tail.

Find out more about Take Your Dog to Work Day at www.takeyourdog.com. They have tips on preparing your dog for the office, and information to help you show the value to your boss, such as the fact that one in five U.S. companies allow pets in the workplace.

Super sniffers!

Chatham's super sniffer, at rest.

Any dog owner who’s waited while their dog spends what seems like five full minutes sniffing a single light pole knows that there has to be very interesting stories behind every smell for our canine pals. But next time you get annoyed at the interruption to your power walk as Ginger strains to snuffle a teeny spot on the sidewalk–or even worse, roll in some roadkill carcass–you should be thankful for that instinctual attraction.

An article in this weekend’s Sunday newspaper Parade magazine talks about the success of dogs detecting cancer, by smell. “Sniffing out Disease” says that a study found that dogs correctly identified breast cancer 88% of the time and lung cancer 99%, by sniffing the person’s breath. It’s fascinating, and wonderful, but I don’t see modern medicine ever relying on a doggie diagnosis, sadly, the legal risks are huge.

BTW, I did check out Energy Gym’s doggie yappy hour last week, and it basically was a couple of tables set up in their back courtyard, with representatives from the new-to-Shirlington Dogma Dog Bakery, and a  Dog’s Day Out just north of Old Town Alexandria. I have to say my girls loved Dogma’s treats, and they looked good enough for me to eat, especially the carrot cake. Kudos to all for the effort, I’m all for anything that promotes Shirlington as dog-friendly!

Yappy hour in Shirlington this Wednesday

The Energy Club in Shirlington is hosting a dog yappy hour this week, Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm in the courtyard in the rear of the building. With all the dogs in Shirlington, and the dog park right across the street, it should draw a lot of pups. It’s on the club’s website, but doesn’t say whether it’s a happy hour in the traditional sense, like the one Hotel Monaco hosts in Old Town on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which is a true “sip & sniff”–you can sit and sip a beer or glass of wine while your dog engages in the universal dog-greeting activity of sniffing you-know-whats! I hope it is, that’s one thing that would be great in the ‘hood, an outdoor patio where you didn’t have to tie the dogs outside the barrier while you sit at a table, but something where your canine pal can sit right with you. Stay tuned, I plan on checking it out…

New Alexandria law: protect, or prevent?

An article in The Examiner says that the Alexandria city council is going to consider legislation that will outlaw tying a pet outside for more than 60 minutes. Vice Mayor Donley says the intent is to protect dogs from neglect, but I think Alexandria resident dog owners need to sit up, pay attention and make sure their voices are heard.

As Alicia Hughes, a member of the council, points out, technically, someone who brings their dog to one of the many outdoor restaurants could be fined. Or what about taking your dog to a picnic at the waterfront or Fort Ward Park? Do you have to leave after 59 minutes or risk a fine? Does the dog have to be tied up and unattended, or will it not apply when the owner is present? Does it apply to public property or private, or both?

Intent is all well and good, but all it takes is one dog-hater in authority to begin enforcing the letter of the law and life will become miserable for dog owners. I found that out recently when my condo association had implemented new visitor parking rules to keep people from excessively using the few visitor spots. Our intent was to only enforce chronic offenders who abused the privilege, but a few residents with too much time on their hands, and unfortunately temporary authority, have taken it upon themselves to make sure thelaw is enforced, exactly as it is written, all the time.

But I digress.  Alexandrians need to watch this one.

Good for a laugh

A friend of mine put this on her Facebook page the other day, it’s so goofy you have to laugh. It’s also classic Golden Retriever, Ginger stares at the food with that intense Golden gaze, yet politely waits to be fed, instead of just grabbing all the food.

What Golden owner hasn’t been the object of that intense stare? Not too many dogs would have that patience, or obedience! The laugh track is tacky, though.

Dog park clean-up day

Shirlington Dog Park clean-up day was yesterday. Luckily there wasn’t a ton to do, for the most part people do clean up after their dogs, so most of the work was sweeping and scraping dirt off the paved path.

Keith, volunteer dog park manager

Keith Fred, a volunteer that oversees the park, organized the event.
Hundreds of people use the park, and it seems on warm, nice weather weekends that number reaches into the thousands! Which is great, as long as everyone cleans up, and keeps an eye on their dog. There’s nothing worse than some aggressive dog starting a fight and their owner is off gabbing on their cell phone, blissfully unaware of the ugliness that is about to ensue.

Smiling volunteers clear the path

The park is open dawn to dusk, seven days a week. You can find out more about the Shirlington Dog Park by joining the Yahoo Group Shirlington Dogs II.

Travolta’s dogs killed

I just read on CNN that John Travolta’s two dogs were killed last week while someone was walking them to a grassy area at the Bangor, Maine airport. That poor family. We all know how comforting the unconditional love of dogs can be, and for that family to have to endure the loss of their teenage son then see their pets killed in a senseless accident is just tragic. I won’ t equate the two losses, dogs are family members, and their loss is so painful, but you always know that you will most likely outlive a dog. While a child, a parent should never have to bury. But it justs seems so much for one family to bear.

There’s a week for everything!

Did you know this week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week? And you’ll never guess who’s promoting it. Yep, the U.S. Postal Service. Here’s their press release. It’s actually pretty smart, because it’s such a common perception that mail carriers are afraid of, and get bitten by, dogs. There’s even a MacDonald’s radio ad running right now that says something about rewarding the “mailman who delivers to the Rottweiller kennel.” And if the tips they provide, such as don’t run, make eye contact or scream when approached by an aggressive dog, help save even one person from being bitten, it’s only going to benefit dogs in the end. Here’s a picture of two dogs in a state of total NON-aggression, one they are quite comfortable in, wouldn’t you say?
