Scottish Walk Parade Dec. 1

Many people have annual traditions for their holiday celebrations. One of mine is the Scottish Walk parade in Old Town Alexandria.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the streets of historic Old Town will be filled with pipe and drum bands, men and women in kilts and assorted plaid finery, and lots of dog breed and rescue groups.

There are more than 100 groups marching, including Golden Retriever Rescue, Education and Training (GRREAT), the D.C. Area Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Group, the National Capital Bearded Collie Club, the Scottish Terrier Club of Greater Washington D.C., and always a crowd favorite, the Mid Atlantic Scottish Deerhounds.

Saturday’s forecast calls for sunshine, temperatures in the mid-50s, and zero percent chance of rain—perfect parade weather!

The event is dog-friendly, as are many Old Town businesses, so feel free to bring your pup. Be forewarned, however, that it is crowded and noisy, so if throngs of people, bagpipes, or gunfire scare Fido, think about leaving him at home.

Pet-friendly renovations

We all know we’d do just about anything for the comfort of our pets, and for some people, that includes home renovations.

I came across a fun article in the Wall Street Journal that shows how some families have made changes to their homes that make it more convenient to care for their pets while at the same keeping their homes neat and attractive.

The creative upgrades range from hidden litter boxes to dog doors discreetly tucked under stairwells to feeding stations built into a kitchen island.

Read “Reigning Cats and Dogs.”

When I did a kitchen renovation recently I definitely designed it with the dogs in mind.

I hated the eyesore of the pile of leashes, keys and other dog-care accessories that I tried to organize with baskets and buckets—but it always just cluttered up the countertop.

American Cabinet Refacers happily accomodated my request to increase the width of a tall cabinet they were building for me by 4 inches and put a door on the side. I then installed a number of inexpensive key hook racks and created a single, hidden space to store all my keys, leashes, the Chuck-it, doggie raincoats, and more.

Check it out:

If you’re not planning on renovating anytime soon, there are still lots of products to help you keep your home clutter-free, attractive and dog-friendly.

For example, the “TownHaus” from In the Company of Dogs, which is a hardwood dog crate that looks like a bedside or end table, but provides a comfortable shelter for your pup. Or the hardwood and powder-coated metal artisan-crafted gates that come in swirl and giraffe patterns.

Meet Bret Michaels at PetSmart Nov. 16

We all think our pets are rock stars, but how often do you get to bring your pet to meet a REAL rock star?

Well, PetSmart in Manassas, Va., is giving you that chance on Friday, Nov. 16, with an appearance by former Poison lead singer and reality television star Bret Michaels.

Bret will be debuting the holiday additions to the Pets Rock collection of rock and roll-themed toys, beds, apparel, collars, leashes, and bowls, which are available exclusively at PetSmart.

Where else can you buy a Santa toy sporting a skull and crossbones on his jolly big belly? I smell a stocking stuffer!

In order to get to meet Bret, you have to buy any Bret Michaels Pets Rock item at the Manassas, Va., PetSmart located at 10834 Sudley Manor Drive. Then you get a lanyard valid for entry to the meet-and-greet event on Friday, Nov. 16, where you and your pet will be able to get your picture taken with Bret and get an autograph.

The event starts at 3:00 p.m., and fans with lanyards should arrive by 2:00 p.m. to line up.

The lanyards were available starting Nov. 2, and there are a limited number available. So if you want to guarantee a chance to meet Bret, you’ll want to get to the store and make a Pets Rock purchase soon.

Each lanyard guarantees a spot to get an autograph, and there is a limit of one lanyard and one autograph on lanyard or any Bret Michaels Pets Rock item per person. The offer is not valid for online purchases, and purchases made prior to Nov. 2 do not qualify.

The Walk begins at 9:00 a.m. at Market Square and takes a 1 1/2 mile route through historic Old Town.

New dog park mural…improved??

A cute mural featuring cavorting dogs that was painted on the exterior wall of Arlington’s Wag More Dogs doggie day care is no more. It was the subject of an extended court battle between the business owner and Arlington County, who considered the artwork illegal advertising for the business.

Read the Two Dog Tales posts: County blocks doggie day care and Wag More Dogs loses mural court battle.

The mural has been covered by an ugly blue tarp since 2010 as the issue was addressed by various courts. Here’s what it looked like:

Last week, an “Art Cream Truck” was parked in the Shirlington Dog Park as an artist from Art Slab Movement painted a new mural.

Not a dog in sight. Nor any other real-life animal.

The new artwork looks like something out of Maurice Sendak’s children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are.”

There’s a tree with windows, a creature that bears a slight resemblance to a bird in a tire swing, and two more brightly-colored creatures sitting in a nest that appears to be filled with water.

It’s better than the tattered blue tarp dog park visitors have had to suffer for more than two years. And it’s certainly better than anything I could paint.

But it’s a shame the cute dogs had to go.

They were much more appropriate for the space, and didn’t elicit the comments overheard the past few days at the park, which generally begin with, “What the heck ARE those things?”

It reminds me of the situation in Old Town Alexandria in 2009 when the city blocked the expansion of an existing hunting and fishing supply store and the owner leased the space to a sex shop. The city may have won, but the people who have to walk by every day definitely lost.

Chris Cooley helps animals Oct. 6

Former Washington Redskin Chris Cooley is hosting a fundraiser to benefit Friends of Homeless Animals at his Leesburg art gallery this Saturday, Oct. 6, from noon to 5:00 p.m. Chris, along with several of the gallery’s featured artists, have crafted one-of-a-kind pet food bowls to sell at the fundraiser.

Check out this funny video featuring Chris talking about the event while he creates a bowl under the watchful (well, kind of) eyes of his two FOHA-rescue mutts, Chewy and Moose:

Even though I’m not a Redskins fan (that’s a Buffalo Bills cap I’m sporting on the “About” page of this blog), I love this guy. I can see why he was such a fan favorite for his lack of ego and generosity, and most of all his sense of humor. Cooley played tight end for the Redskins for eight seasons, but was released in August and is now a free agent.

In addition to the pottery, there will be other pet-related art for sale, music, food, Redskins memorabilia items and Chris is raffling a Cooley game jersey.

FOHA, one of Northern Virginia’s original no-kill animal rescues, will be marking its 40th year of saving abused, abandoned and unwanted cats and dogs in 2013. FOHA typically houses 100 dogs and 50 cats at its facility in Aldie, Va., which is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Cooley Gallery is at 12 S. King Street in Leesburg, Va.
