Popular Pompanoosuc pet adoption event

The pet adoption event at Pompanoosuc Mills furniture store in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday, Feb. 16, drew a steady stream of foot and paw traffic despite the chilly temperatures and sporadic snow flurries. There were about a dozen adoptable dogs from Homeward Trails Animal Rescue hanging out on the custom furniture waiting to meet their forever families.

Wordless Wednesday

During last week’s relative heat wave of 70 degree weather in late January, the girls were more interested in lounging about munching on a stick instead of walking. Yes, the same stick. And yes, Sundae is being the bratty little sister and trying to take the stick away from her patient, gentle sister who is trying to hold on to it.

Kurgo goodie giveaway

Pet travel product company Kurgo has a giveaway every Friday on their Facebook page, and a few weeks ago, I won! They post the item(s) that they’re giving away, page visitors “like” the post, then they pick and post a name from all the “likes” and the winner has 30 minutes to respond to the post or they pick another name.

Check out Kurgo’s Facebook page.

One of the prizes was a black fleece vest for humans with an embroidered Kurgo logo. Here’s a picture of the vest modeled by Chatham, since she’s a lot prettier than I am!

The other prize was a Collaps A Bowl. This is a really cool thing-I-never-knew-I-needed. The bowl stores flat:

IMG_2014

Then when you want to use it, you just pop it up, and it holds up to 24 ounces of liquid or food.

This is totally going to replace the hard plastic bowl stored on my car’s floor that I use to give the girls water on road trips or when we’re hiking. At only an inch thick when collapsed, I can put it out of sight in the seat back pocket. Anything to keep the car, I mean dogmobile, even a little tidier!

It’s dishwasher safe, and fairly thick rubber, although it wouldn’t last a minute if your dog is a chewer.

Thanks, Kurgo!

Pet snow safety tips

With the forecast calling for 70 percent chance of snow and temperatures in the 20s in the metro DC area on Friday, it’s important that pet owners know how to keep their pets safe.

One thing I didn’t know is that more dogs are lost during the winter than any other season, because snow mutes smells and impairs their ability to track their way home. So never let your dog off leash unattended when the ground is snow-covered!

Here’s a pic of Sundae giving her best “Pleasepleaseplease let me in!” face from my friend’s deck during the snowfall we got Christmas Eve last year:

Heavy breathing at the dog park

I stayed up way too late last night taking advantage of Showtime’s free preview weekend and watching episodes from season two of Homeland, so the girls and I headed over to the Shirlington dog park much later than usual.

Turns out we were there at the same time as the D.C. Bulldog Meetup group, and I’ve never seen more heavy-breathing, wrinkle-faced, snaggle-toothed fur faces in my life!

According to the group’s website, meetup.com/dcbulldogs, more than 60 dogs were there, and they were all having a blast.

The Bulldogs were surprisingly agile on their stubby little legs!

There are a ton of Meetup groups in the area for owners of specific dog breeds, so if you want to get together with like-minded dog lovers, go to Meetup.com and search under the Pets & Animals category.

Tying your dog outside a shop

I took this cute picture of Chatham, Sundae and their friend Lily attentively waiting for me and Lily’s owner outside a coffee shop the other day.

coffee

I never tie the girls outside unless I’m running into a shop for no more than a minute or two, and I can stay close to the door and watch them at all times.

But it got me thinking. Especially in urban neighborhoods, you see dogs tied up outside shops all the time.

Unfortunately, I found that dog-napping in such circumstances is not uncommon.

Just about a week ago, on Christmas Eve, a little girl’s beloved pet Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was stolen from outside a shop in New York City.

Luckily, though, this particular story had a happy ending. A good samaritan paid $220 out of her own pocket to “buy” Marley from the thieves, and he was reunited with his young owner, thanks to his microchip.

Watch Marley’s reunion with his young owner on this story by ABC News.

This is one big reason why it’s dangerous to tie up your dog outside a store. Even if you’re in a “safe” neighborhood, your dog could get scared and slip their collar. Or a leashed dog going by could get aggressive and you’re not there to protect your pup.

Marley’s story is also a huge testimonial for microchipping your pet. Without the chip, who knows if Marley ever would have been reunited with Mia.

If your dog isn’t microchipped, your number one New Year’s resolution should be to get it done.

For just $30, you can get your pet chipped at one of the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s rabies and microchip clinics. The next clinic is Jan. 24.

See the dates for all AWLA clinics in 2013 here.

I wish more stores would be dog-friendly. But, I understand it’s probably a liability issue. So, just sayin’, be safe with your pet.

Helping Newtown and holiday wishes

There isn’t much I can add to everything that has been said about the terrible tragedy in Newtown. Wondering what I could do to help, my first thought was about the healing abilities of a pet’s unconditional love. The wishes of one of the victim’s families will help that happen.

Six-year-old, red-haired, freckle-faced Catherine Hubbard loved animals, and her family has asked that anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory donate to The Animal Center in Newtown. They’ve set up a memorial Catherine Violet Hubbard Fund in her honor.

Two Dog Tales wishes everyone a safe, happy and healthy holiday season, and an adventure-filled 2013.

Chatham and Sundae just say, “Have a cool Yule, y’all.”

Photo gallery: Scottish Walk 2012

Today’s Scottish Walk parade drew thousands of spectators and parade participants to Old Town Alexandria to welcome the holiday season with pipe and drum corps, bagpipers, local polititians and lots of dog breed groups.

It was chilly, but two- and four-legged marchers bundled up.

Santa-inspired gear was also popular.

Even Santa’s elves took a break from toy-making to entertain the crowds!
