Get your pet’s portrait..and help a good cause

pet portraitEvery Dog Has its Day” is a fundraiser of the Art Options program of the St. John’s Community Services-DC, where you can order a commissioned portrait of your pet that will be painted by an artist supported by St. John’s.

The artists will paint animals of all shapes and sizes in abstract or realistic style (your choice) from a photograph that you upload on their website. All pieces are original art and will be acrylic on canvas, and pet owners are welcome to make special requests in the comments section.

A variety of sizes from 11″x16″ to 30″x30″ are available in prices ranging from $100 to $275. Seventy percent of each commission goes directly to the artist while the remainder purchases supplies for the program.

Believe me, that’s a bargain for an original artwork featuring your pet. I have an oil painting of a much-beloved and sadly no longer with us Golden that I bartered a summer of horseback riding lessons for. If our house ever went up in flames, it would be the third thing I grabbed on my way out the door—after Chatham and Sundae, of course!

Get more information and order your custom pet portrait here.

All the pet portraits will be displayed in July and August at the at the Pepco Gallery Place in Washington, D.C., with a special Every Dog Has Its Day Exhibit and Reception on July 18.

St. John’s Community Services is a non-denominational, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) human services organization that supports more than 600 children and adults with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities and their families in Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Arlington to allow deck dining with dogs

coffeeAccording to the ARLNow blog, Arlington County’s Health Department has decided to allow restaurants to let patrons bring their dogs into outdoor dining areas!

Read Health Dept. to Allow ‘Dog Friendly’ Outdoor Dining

That’s great news for dog owners who have limited opportunities to enjoy outdoor dining with their dogs.

Even Shirlington Village, with its bountiful cafe seating, was not easy. You had to hold out for one of the few tables adjacent to the sidewalk so you could tie Fido on the outside of the barrier. And on a sunny warm evening? Forgetaboutit.

Over Easter weekend, I went to a darling restaurant in West Chester, Pa., called the Four Dogs Tavern. Awesome food, but even better atmosphere, because just about every table on the expansive patio had a dog (or two, or in our case, three!) attached to it.

Speaking of dog-friendly Shirlington, a new restaurant is going into the space previously occupied by Bistro Bistro, named Copperwood Tavern.

Not only will they offer small-batch whiskeys and moonshine to go along with locally-sourced hearty dishes, but the best part is they tout their dog-friendliness right on their website:

“And since a woodsy retreat wouldn’t be complete without a loyal hunting companion, we encourage you to bring Fido along too. Copperwood Tavern features a 56-person, dog-friendly patio with custom copper dog bowls and house-baked dog treats.”

Pups in the park season: play ball!

Bark in the ParkToday is Opening Day for the Washington Nationals baseball team, and they face off against the Marlins at 1:05 p.m. But what local dog owners can really get excited about is Pups in the Park!

The Nats are once again holding their extremely popular promotion where you can bring your dog to a game. It doesn’t get much better than being able to enjoy a hot dog and cold beverage while cheering on the home team while spending quality time with your four-legged friend.

This year, there are four Pups in the Park games.

The games are:

  • Sunday, April 14 at 1:35 p.m. against the Atlanta Braves
  • Saturday, May 11 at 4:05 p.m. against the Chicago Cubs
  • Sunday, June 9  at 1:25 p.m. against the Minnesota Twins
  • Saturday, Sept. 4 at 7:05 p.m. against the Philadelphia Phillies

The special Pups section is the Outfield  Reserved section 140-143. Tickets can be bought online, and they are $22 for an owner ticket, $8 for a dog ticket. Proceeds from dog tickets go to the Washington Humane Society.

Get more information and buy tickets.

The Potomac Nationals, who play just down I-95 in Woodbridge, Va., are also having Bark in the Park promotions at two games this season:

  • Sunday, May 5 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans
  • Sunday, Aug. 25 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks

The great thing about the P-Nats Bark in the Park games is you can buy tickets and sit anywhere with your pup. Tickets range from $8 to $15, depending on location and if you get a military, senior or child discount. Parking is free!

Buy tickets.

One warning, if your dog doesn’t like thunderstorms, don’t bring him/her. The stands are metal, and the fans stamp their feet to rally the team, and it sounds just like thunder.

Sunday cherry blossom dog walks

111_1195If you’ve driven anywhere near downtown DC this week, you know it’s National Cherry Blossom Festival time.

Not by the beautiful, lush pink blossoms adorning the trees around the Tidal Basin—because they’re still in hiding—but by the droves of tourists clogging roads, sidewalks and what seems like every single visible surface.

But us locals just have to keep a grin (or grimace) on our faces and keep saying, “tourists are good for the economy…” while we also enjoy the many events that are part of the festival for the next few weeks.

This year, organizers are recognizing our furry friends with a series of Sunday afternoon cherry blossom dog walks. The Pets in the Park: Cherry Blossom Dog Walks are led by a National Park Service ranger on March 31 and April 7 at 3:00 p.m.

Walkers should bring their own water and waste bags, and keep in mind dogs have to be on leash at all times.

Meet at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, 900 Ohio Drive, SW. For more information, call 202-426-6841.

Alexandria St. Patty’s pics

Even though St. Patrick’s Day was Sunday, you can  never get enough of Irish cheer! Here are some pictures from the Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day parade a few weeks ago.

Thank you to these companies who sponsored the dog show: Your Dog’s Best Friends, Dogma, Dogtopia, News Channel 8, Novadog magazine, Doggywalker.com, Nature’s Nibbles, Olde Towne School for Dogs, Fur Get Me Not, and Barkley Square!

While her hair may not be the right color, Sundae has the impish look of a leprechaun…

Even though he’s Cuban (a Havenese), Baxter celebrates St. Patty’s with a touch of the green!

Hootie looks a little put out at his wee topper…

This dog show award-winner didn’t mind carrying some extra weight, in the form of Irish whiskey.
