Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane, Va., was hopping this past weekend, despite intermittent downpours on Saturday. Furry faces of both the two- and four-legged variety were very creative with how they took shelter!

Bear was a great umbrella guard dog.

Under the picnic table was Chatham’s refuge of choice.

Sundae hoped a cracker crumb or two might leap off the table.

And this English Bulldog just joined his humans right on the picnic bench.

Who could resist that face, anyway?

Dog-friendly cherry blossoms

The cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin peaked a few days ago, and Mother Nature has kindly not yet blown or drowned them off their branches. So, being a 20+ year D.C. native, and having suffered a one-hour-to-go-two-miles commute to the 14th Street bridge on Thursday evening, I packed up the girls just after 6 a.m. this morning and headed downtown.

I was not the only one with this idea.

IMG_4006

Even so, the blossoms and views of the Capitol, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument and Martin Luther King Memorial were beautiful.

IMG_4021

Romance was in the air, as well. We saw two proposals, and one bride.

IMG_4034

And even managed to take a nice “family” picture, despite the ducks distracting my oh-so-attentive Retrievers…

IMG_4009

There were lots of other dogs, and the loop around the Tidal Basin is paved and an easy stroll. But, if you want to get to see the cherry blossoms this year, go early, and go soon. It’s supposed to rain all day Tuesday.

Bark at Barcroft with GW Colonials baseball April 19

On Saturday, April 19, the George Washington baseball team is hosting the inaugural Bark at Barcroft Promotion at their home field of Barcroft Park in South Arlington. Dog owners get to sit beside your best canine friend(s) while watching the GW Colonials take on Massachusetts in an Atlantic 10 Conference game!

Bark at Barcroft

Starting at 11:00 a.m., pet owners can enter the DogZone, a special area located inside the gates of Barcroft Park where local vendors will be providing dog-related services, free giveaways, information and dog-related advice. Fans and their pets will then be invited to enter the grandstand to watch the Colonials face the Minutemen at 1:00 p.m.

All pet owners attending the game with their dog will be required to sign a waiver acknowledging that their animal is vaccinated. Fans are asked to only bring well-behaved, social and leashed dogs to the ballpark.

Ticket options for the event include regularly-priced single-game general admission tickets at $6, or a specialty ticket which includes admission to the game and the choice of a GW dog leash, collar or bandanna for $20 or $25.

For tickets, visit the GW Athletics Ticket office at the Charles E. Smith Center, call (202) 99-GWTIX or email tickets@gwu.edu. Tickets will also be available for purchase the day of the game or at any other GW Baseball games prior to April 19.

Wordless Wednesday: Super Pet Expo pics

Chatham and I went and volunteered at the GRREAT (Golden Retriever Rescue, Education and Training) booth at the Super Pet Expo in Chantilly, Va., on March 22. Once we were done spreading the word about wonderful Goldens, we took a spin around the show floor and saw dogs of all shapes, sizes and energy levels, toys, and big, big bones…

Black dogs all over the news

It’s been a big week for black dogs in the news.

First, the Huffington Post featured the photographs taken by Fred Levy, a Massachusetts photographer who wanted to bring attention to the beauty of black dogs, in the article Stunning Photo Series Highlights The Beauty Of Black Dogs That Are Often Overlooked In Adoption.

The article was shared more than 20,000 times on Facebook in just a few days. Check out all the photos in Levy’s Black Dogs Project blog.

I especially like this proud poser, who more than a little resembles Sundae, agree?

Then, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate, to us less formal Americans) released a family photo of themselves with eight-month-old Prince George and their black Cocker Spaniel, Lupo.

I love how George is gazing at Lupo (who I am 99 percent sure is gazing at a squirrel, willing it to come closer). All kids should grow up with dogs.

And last, but definitely not least, is the local search for Skie.

find skie

She’s a six-year-old rescue Lab mix who escaped from her recent adopter in Arlington back in February. She’s been spotted nearly every day this week hanging out with a fox on the grounds of King David Memorial Gardens cemetery in Falls Church. I hope her owners are reunited with her soon.

Spread the word and keep up to date on the search by liking the Where’s Skie Facebook page.
