Saturday, May 6 is the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s annual Walk for the Animals event, and this year, it’s being held right at the shelter! Traditionally the walk began and ended at an Arlington park, but they’ve moved the festivities to the shelter in Shirlington. You’ll be able to enjoy food trucks, demonstrations, music, a costume contest and more, while also meeting adoptable animals and touring the facility.
The event runs from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and features a 3-mile run or a one mile fun walk. Registration is $35. Pre-registered walkers get a t-shirt and a bandanna.
Afterwards, you can take your pup across the street to romp leash-free at the Shirlington dog park, enjoy a delicious brew at New District Brewing Company, or enjoy a dog-friendly al fresco meal at one of the many Village of Shirlington restaurants, all within a 5-minute walk!
Being a former resident of that area, I will give you a heads up that there is virtually no street parking near the shelter. Your best bet is to grab a free spot in one of the multi-level parking garages in the Village of Shirlington and walk down South Arlington Mill Drive to the shelter (then be sure to patronize a business before or after the Walk!).
AWLA is at 2650 S. Arlington Mill Dr., Arlington, VA 22206.
