Airport puppy love

Even though I was heading home to my beloved pups, my face still lit up with joy at seeing an adorable Black Lab one recent evening in the Providence, R.I., airport. Even better, his vest said, “Pet me!”

Cody is part of PVD Pups, a program at TF Green airport to help relax stressed travelers.

Just 8 months old, he’s so chill he was accepted into the training at 4 1/2 months, the youngest PVD Pup so far.

Way to go, PVD!

La-Z-dogs for adoption!

Well, I can’t guarantee the dogs will be mellow, but what better way to spoil your new furry family member than by adopting them, then letting them pick out a new piece of people-furniture to sprawl across at home at the same time?!

Come meet adoptable pets from the Washington Animal Rescue League at the La-Z-Boy furniture store in Logan Circle downtown on Saturday, June 11 from noon to 3 pm.

Lucky Dog Rescue barbecue pics

Took the girls out to the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue barbecue in Potomac today, and had a wonderful time! Their 7th annual event, it sadly is the last as the generous family who owns the several acre fully fenced property are selling the home soon. Check out these happy pups who will most certainly take looooong naps when they get home!

Happy (almost) Memorial Day weekend!

I meant to post this yesterday for Wordless Wednesday… Spotted this cute artwork in the window of Cork & Fork on 14th St. NW while taking a lunchtime stroll during what I fear is all we can expect of a “Spring” this year — two days of 80 degrees, sunshine and no humidity.

Fort Ward Park: convenient dog walk destination

If you’re tired of taking the same path for your daily dog walks, Alexandria’s Fort Ward Park is a great place to add some variety to your venues, and it’s inside the Beltway!

Fort ward

The park is located on Braddock Road just east of 395, and offers a paved .6-mile loop that is popular with two- and four-legged walkers and runners.

You can also exercise your brain and learn about Alexandria’s post-Civil War African American community with new historical signage throughout the park. With a playground and lots of green space and picnic tables, Fort Ward is a nice place for family play time or a take away meal, too.

Fort Ward Park is open 9 am to dusk seven days a week at 4301 West Braddock Road,
Alexandria, Virginia 22304.

Wordless Wednesday: carnivore vegan?

Took this pic last weekend on a hike around Roosevelt Island. While Master Beggar Sundae will scarf down just about anything–except, weirdly, bananas–she most definitely is a meat-loving carnivore!

Wordless Wednesday: Random signs of Spring

Took the girls on a long walk through the ‘hood over the weekend, and saw a few signs of Spring that made me smile.

The best was this bird nest in a fence, made mostly from blue Easter basket fake grass.

Daffodils pushing through undergrowth.

A tree in bloom.

And this tree has already blown its blooms!

We made some noise…and some toys!

I went to the NOVADog magazine toy making class at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington today, and had a blast. Not only did I make some fun toys for the shelter dogs, I had a great time chatting away with the other dog-lovers, some who came from as far away as Round Hill and even Charlottesville! Seemed like everyone else was sharing stories of their beloved fur-babies, too.

Each participant selects two tennis balls, two empty water bottles, and two t-shirts from a pile. Then, the instructor guided us through the process of making safe dog toys with the materials, while also talking about dog safety in general.

Most of the class attendees had two or more dogs, and many were also involved in rescue organizations. I sat next to a vet who owns a mobile pet office, Critterfixer’s Mobile Veterinary Care. Her insights were a great addition to the discussions on what to do if your dog eats something they shouldn’t!

The hour and a half flew by, and at the end, we each had two toys using the water bottles and socks and two made with tennis balls and t-shirts.

Then, we got to go see the shelter animals. This little cutie, a Chihuahua mix, is available for adoption! She’s got the best personality, with a turbo-charged tail! Her name is Alexis, and she’s just 10 months old.
